Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Newton has served as Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the board of directors of Apollo since 2014. From 2009 to 2014, Mr. Newton served as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at ArthroCare Corporation, a medical device company. Prior to ArthroCare, Mr. Newton served in a number of executive officer roles, including President and Chief Executive Officer, at Synenco Energy, Inc., a Canadian oil sands company. From 1994 to 2004, Mr. Newton was a Partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP. Mr. Newton holds a B.B.A. in accounting from The University of Texas at San Antonio.
Chief Financial Officer
Ms. Cavanaugh has served as Chief Financial Officer of Apollo since 2015. From 2014 to 2015 Ms. Cavanaugh provided advisory services to several healthcare companies. From 2010 to 2014, Ms. Cavanaugh served as Senior Vice President of Finance at Harden Healthcare, LLC, a provider of healthcare services for the long-term care industry, until its sale to Gentiva Health Services, Inc. She began her career with Ernst & Young before serving in executive management positions at The Cancer Therapy and Research Center, an affiliate of The University of Texas Health Science Center; Encore Medical Corporation, a medical device company; and Solis Women’s Health, a diagnostic imaging company. Ms. Cavanaugh holds a B.B.A. in accounting and finance from the University of Texas at Austin and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Chief Medical Officer
In 2006, Dr. Gostout was one of the co-founders of Apollo Endosurgery and has served as Apollo’s Chief Medical Officer since January 2017.
Prior to 2017, Dr. Gostout was a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, with a joint appointment in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Department of Surgery. He was a Professor of Medicine in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and the Director of the Developmental Endoscopy and Research Unit. He was the founder of The Mayo Clinic GI Bleeding Team and the Developmental Endoscopy Unit. Dr. Gostout has been Member of The Board of Trustees in the American College of Gastroenterology and has been the President of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). He is the founder of the ASGE Interactive Training and Technology center.
Dr. Gostout holds a BS in Biology from Villanova. He received a MD from the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and completed his residency and clinical training at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Executive Vice President, Operations
Mr. Molesphini joined Apollo as Executive Vice President, Operations in April, 2018. From 2011 to 2015, Mr. Molesphini served as Vice President, Manufacturing Engineering for ArthroCare Corporation, which was purchased by Smith and Nephew. Mr. Molesphini continued on with Smith and Nephew as a Global Manufacturing Engineering executive managing an organization of approximately 200 employees across 6 sites. Prior to ArthroCare, Mr. Molesphini held various roles of increasing responsibility in Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Engineering at General Motors. Mr. Molesphini holds a B.S. in Management Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA in Finance from The University of Michigan.
Vice President, US Sales and Global Marketing
Bret Schwartzhoff joined Apollo in December 2014. Mr. Schwartzhoff brings over 20 years of senior management roles in medical device sales and marketing in the fields of bariatrics, general surgery, orthopedics, and urology.
Mr. Schwartzhoff most recently held the position of Vice President of Marketing, Sports Medicine and Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Spine at Smith and Nephew and ArthroCare Corporation.
Mr. Schwartzhoff holds a BS from Mankato State University, and a MBA from Wake Forest University.
Vice President, International Sales and Marketing
Mike Gutteridge joined Apollo in March 2016. As VP of International Sales and Marketing, he oversees Apollo’s commercial operations outside of the United States.
Prior to joining Apollo, Mr. Gutteridge held a Senior Leadership position with Smith and Nephew’s European and Canadian ear nose and throat (ENT) business. He also brings with him fourteen years of medical device experience as a sales leader with ArthroCare Corporation in Europe.
Vice President, Quality, Regulatory, and Clinical Affairs
Laura LeBoeuf joined Apollo in January of 2013. She brings with her over 25 years of experience in the medical device field.
Ms. LeBoeuf has held positions in Manufacturing, R&D, Quality, Regulatory and Clinical groups for companies ranging from well-established to initial start-up. She has extensive experience with Class II & III devices including radiofrequency-based surgical instrumentation, orthopedic implants, heart valves and pacemakers.
Ms. LeBoeuf holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University, and an MS in Engineering Management from The University of Texas.
Vice President, Human Resources
Mary League joined Apollo in August 2009.
During her 25 years in the human resources field, Ms. League has held leadership positions across a variety of industries from global enterprises to very early venture backed start-ups. Prior to joining Apollo, Ms. League co-founded Human Paradigm, a human resources consultancy company.
Ms. League holds a BSW from the University of Texas at Austin and is a recipient of the Charles W. Laughton Presidential Scholarship.
Vice President, Legal Services
Brian Szymczak joined Apollo in October 2014. He is a licensed attorney with over 15 years of experience advising companies in general corporate and intellectual property matters.
Prior to joining Apollo, Mr. Szymczak was with ArthroCare Corporation, during which he served in several leadership roles including Associate General Counsel, Director of Intellectual Property and Corporate Counsel. Mr. Szymczak was also formerly an Associate at the law firm Baker Botts L.L.P. advising clients in the protection, enforcement and licensing of intellectual property rights.
Mr. Szymczak currently serves as an Independent Director at Heart Sciences. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University, and a J.D. from the Duke University School of Law.
Vice President, Business Process and Systems
Boris Fischer joined Apollo Endosurgery in August of 2014.
Prior to joining Apollo, Dr. Fischer served as Vice President, Technology, Systems & Infrastructure at ArthroCare Corporation for nine year. Preceding ArthroCare, Mr. Fischer served in a variety of leadership roles at General Motors in Europe and the U.S.
Dr. Fischer holds a BEng (Hons.), MSc, and Ph.D. from Coventry University (UK), and a MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management (Germany).
Vice President, Manufacturing Operations
Felix L. Nieves joined Apollo Endosurgery as VP of Manufacturing Operations in March of 2015.
Prior to joining Apollo, Mr. Nieves held leadership roles at Medtronic for eleven years, including responsibility for the startup of a manufacturing site and as Director of Concurrent Engineering for the Spinal division.
Mr. Nieves also brings with him tenure from GE, US Surgical Corporation and Intel. He served as an NCO with the U.S. Air Force, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering Technology from Southern Illinois University.
Vice President and General Manager Latin America
Geraldo Barbosa joined Apollo Endosurgery as Vice President & General Manager Latin America in January 2016.
Prior to Apollo, Mr. Barbosa was Managing Director for Latin America at Smith & Nephew for four years. Mr. Barbosa previously was with Becton Dickinson as Executive Corporate Officer, President, and CEO for the South Latin American Region.
Mr. Barbosa holds a Marketing degree from ESPM/Superior School of Advertising and Marketing, and Business Administration degree from ESAN/Superior School of Administration and Business, in São Paulo, Brazil.
